چکیده

Steering rods are subject to variety kinds of loads which will eventually cause failure. Automobile manufacturers and engineers are seeking ways to test the fatigue life of the steering rods. Steering rods under periodic loads over millions of cycles will get fatigued. We here provide a fatigue test bench for steering rods which applies periodic loads to the rod with a cam loading system. Cycloid motion is chosen for the cam follower to achieve the smooth and stable kinematic performance in middle and high speed operation. The accuracy of the follower response is analyzed using dimensionless dynamic equation and the application of Matlab is introduced to solve elastodynamic equation and analyze the prime/residual vibration curve of the follower. The cam loading system is built in dynamic analysis software Adams to simulate its virtual operation performance. By calculating the velocity multiplied by acceleration of the follower over the operation period, the extent to which the inertia load from the follower affects the torque on the cam shaft will be obtained with the help of Adams/postprocessor. The force loads acting on the cam shaft can also be acquired using simulation tools. By virtual prototyping the cam loading system’s performance can be foreseen before a real prototype is built. Introducing cam loading method into fatigue test is an innovative application. © 2012 Jordan Journal of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. All rights reserved

Study and Simulation of Shot peening Effect on Fatigue Life of a Powder Forged Connecting rod

Shot peening applies a residual compressive stress field (RCSF) on the surface of parts. It also shifts “crack nucleation sites” to sub-surface locations. A nondestructive method of measuring the stresses, Sin2ψ was utilized here and the stress values introduced to Ansys software. For this purpose, uniform stress in all directions was applied on the con rod. Loading on the rod in Ansys had thre...

Human Fatigue Due to Automobile Steering Wheel Vibration

This study investigated the human fatigue caused by automobile steering wheel vibration. Discomfort data was collected from 15 subjects using a steering wheel vibration bench. A rigid wheel was used to apply sinusoidal rotational excitation of 0.08 m/s and 0.1 m/s amplitude at test frequencies of 4, 8, 16 and 32 Hz. Human discomfort was quantified after periods of 1, 5 and 10 minutes by means o...

Random Vibration Fatigue Tests To Prove Integrity Of Cantilevered Attachments On Compressor Shells

Many Air Conditioning and Refrigeration hermetic compressor shells are designed with cantilevered attachments such as control valves. These attachments are subject to several sources of loading such as shell pressure, external tube load or vibration. One of the most common failure modes yet the least predictable is fatigue due to vibration at the joint with the shell. The purpose of the paper i...

Fatigue crack initiation life prediction of railroad wheels

A new multiaxial high-cycle fatigue initiation life prediction model for railroad wheels is proposed in this paper. A general fatigue damage analysis methodology for complex mechanical components is developed and applied to the wheel/rail rolling contact fatigue problem. A 3-D elasto-plastic finite element model is used for stress analysis. A submodeling technique is used to achieve both comput...
